A shopping spree denotes a playful and “devil may care”attitude in a single shopping trip where lots of money is spent.

Lesson 013 - keep cool screw up

  (Starting buzzer)

M:Sometimes these games get really rough!

M:Wow, look at them! It's only five minutes into the game and they are already pushing and shoving.

M:Yeah, they really need to keep cool out there.

M:Li Hua, that's not what I meant. Keep cool means to calm down。Keep, means to hold and cool, meaning cold.

M:Yeah. Another example, remember last week when you got into an argument with the professor over your mid-term grade?

M:Right now Li Hua, you need to keep cool,

M:I can't believe how poorly they are playing.

M:Yeah, they have really managed to screw up this game.

  L:"Screw up"?

M:"Screw up" means not to play well. The home team is certainly messing up.

M:"Screw up,英譯中," it means to mess up.

M:No, it can be used to describe a lot of things. For example, I screw up on tests all the time.

  M:He screwed up at work.

M:Yes, that's why I don't date anymore. Because I screw up all the time.

M:I do screw up a lot; I make mistakes all the time.

M:Look, they are playing like that! What is wrong with these players.

M:I hate this! They can't manage not to screw up tonight.

  L:Michael, 只筦他們screw up,偺們还是要keep cool!

能夠說成是the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar,也能夠說成the fifth day of the fifth lunar month。

What You Are

Jewel: What You Are

I'm driving around town

Kinda bored with the windows rolled down

See a girl on the bus stop bench

Dressed to draw attention

Hoping everyone will stare

If she don't stand out she thinks she'll disappear

Wish I could hold her, tell her, show her

What she wants is already there

A star is a star

It doesn't have to try to shine

Water will fall

A bird just knows how to fly

You don't have to tell a flower how to bloom

Or light how to fill up a room

You already are what you are

And what you are is beautiful

Heard a story the other day

Took place at the local VA

A father talking to his dying son

This was his conversation

"It's not supposed to be like this

You can't go first I can't handle it"

The boy said "Dad now don't you cry,

Remember when I was a child what you used to tell me when I'd ask why?"

(You'd say) Gravity is gravity

It doesn't try to pull you down

Stone is stone

It can't help but hold its ground

The wind just blows, though you can't see

It's everywhere like I'll always be

You already are what you are

And what you are is strong enough

Look in the mirror

Now that's another story to tell

I give love to others

But I give myself hell

I'd have to tell myself

"In every scene there's a perfect plan"

Everything I hoped to be

I already am

A flower is a flower

It doesn't have to try to bloom

And light is light

Just knows how to fill a room

And dark is dark

So the stars have a place to shine

The tide goes out

So it can come back another time

Goodbye makes a love so sweet

And love is love so it can teach us

We already are what we are

And what we are is beautiful

And strong enough

And good enough

And bright enough

(Office ambience)

A:Chen Hao, you need to be prepared for a lot of toasting tonight.

C:Toasting?

A:No, I am talking about honoring someone at a meal or reception by raising a glass of wine, champagne or water and offering a few kind words about that person.

A:There are two kinds of toasts. There is the informal toast that the host offers at the beginning of the meal to welcome his guests.

A:Mr. Davis will stand, raise his glass and thank everyone for coming. He will take a sip of his wine,翻譯. Then the guests, who remain seated, raise their glasses in response and take a sip.

A:The other is more formal and comes near the end of the meal, usually during dessert. Champagne will be served. After each toast, everyone raises a glass and takes a sip of champagne.

A:Not necessarily, but you will be expected to toast James since you worked closely with him.

A:You could say how good James was to work with, tell a funny story about him, wish him success in his new position or use a favorite quote.

A:Chen Hao, Your toast was excellent and you seemed completely at ease. You obviously practiced your remarks.

A:It is acceptable etiquette to raise your water glass instead of the champagne flute. I usually just raise my glass to my lips so it appears that I am drinking when I am not.

A:Not at all. That was correct etiquette. You never drink to yourself. Only to other people.

A:No you wouldn't. I would have warned you about that.

WHAT vain weathercocks we are! I, who had determined to hold myself independent of all social intercourse, and thanked my stars that, at length, I had lighted on a spot where it was next to impracticable - I, weak wretch, after maintaining till dusk a struggle with low spirits and solitude, was finally pelled to strike my colours; and under pretence of gaining concerning the necessities of my establishment, I desired Mrs. Dean, when she brought in supper, to sit down while I ate it; hoping sincerely she would prove a regular gossip, and either rouse me to animation or lull me to sleep by her talk.

****
next to impossible ----- almost impossible.
Thanked my stars that, at length, I had lighted on a spot where it was next to impracticalbe --- after a period of time, I feel lucy that I am in a position of impossible to (keep the word)
Strike one’s colours --- to give up a plan previously set
****

’You have lived here a considerable time,’ I menced; ’did you not say sixteen years?’

’Eighteen, sir: I came when the mistress was married, to wait on her; after she died, the master retained me for his housekeeper.’

’Indeed.’

There ensued a pause. She was not a gossip, I feared; unless about her own affairs, and those could hardly interest me. However, having studied for an interval, with a fist on either knee, and a cloud of meditation over her ruddy countenance, she ejaculated -
’Ah, times are greatly changed since then!’

’Yes,’ I remarked, ’you’ve seen a good many alterations, I suppose?’

’I have: and troubles too,’ she said.

’Oh, I’ll turn the talk on my landlord’s family!’ I thought to myself. ’A good subject to start! And that pretty girl-widow, I should like to know her history: whether she be a native of the country, or, as is more probable, an exotic that the surly INDIGENAE will not recognise for kin.’ With this intention I asked Mrs. Dean why Heathcliff let Thrushcross Grange, and preferred living in a situation and residence so much inferior. ’Is he not rich enough to keep the estate in good order?’ I inquired.

’Rich, sir!’ she returned. ’He has nobody knows what money, and every year it increases. Yes, yes, he’s rich enough to live in a finer house than this: but he’s very near - close-handed; and, if he had meant to flit to Thrushcross Grange, as soon as he heard of a good tenant he could not have borne to miss the chance of getting a few hundreds more. It is strange people should be so greedy, when they are alone in the world!’

’He had a son, it seems?’

’Yes, he had one - he is dead.’
